Still Lifes
I've always been fascinated with the light that comes in
my windows, illuminating and invigorating any objects on
the windowsill or on a nearby table. Those objects, usually
fruit or a pitcher, are backlit by the intense light of the
outdoors. The part of the still life object that is closer to
me appears darker. It creates a challenging spatial puzzle - how
to paint an object that is lighter in color further from me and
darker in the area that is closer to me. The changing seasons and
differing times of day create so many variations to observe and to
paint, keeping the subject matter fresh and vital.
