Monotypes

This series of Monotypes was created in the late summer of 2001.
I traveled to Morgantown, West Virginia to work again with Jonathan Higgins' newly formed Manneken Press. We worked for three days to create 23 new images.

I had begun the Wetland series of paintings in my New York studio and worked with some of those images for the first four Monotypes. I also selected images from the Twilight Grove and Provence paintings. Jonathan and I used a technique called Chine Colle to create some of the Monotype images. First, the image is created on a printing plate. That image is then lifted from the plate onto a translucent sheet of rice paper. Next, that rice paper is pressed into the printing paper by running it through the etching press. The result is an image that has a certain mysterious quality, created by the combination of the translucency of the rice paper on top of the density of the printing paper.
