Ireland
McNichol: "I traveled to Ireland for the first time in 1994. I was
particularly attracted to the Connemara region of the west coast
of Ireland. I was drawn to the dramatic, flat, open spaces of the
boglands which stretch infinitely to the horizon, until meeting the
towering forms of the Twelve Pins Mountains. The region is
rugged and mysterious and continually shrouded in a cool
Atlantic mist."
Seven large canvasses are in this series. Four are from the Twelve
Pins Mountains: "Connemara," "Heartland," "Valley of Kings,"
and "Leaving Connemara." Two are from the Atlantic Coast
where fingers of land extend into the ocean, reaching for
America: "The Sky Road" and "Where the Sky and Beach Meet."
The seventh, from Roscommon County, is "Distant Light."
